Fethiye – New Beginnings

Despite the fact that most of Turkey is engulfed in a temporary cold front at the moment, Spring is definitely in evidence in Fethiye. Recently planted daffodils and crocuses are now giving the walkway along Fethiye harbour a welcome splash of colour, new growth and blossom has suddenly appeared on the once bare branches of trees and the abundance of winter citrus fruits on the market is much reduced and giving way to all that is new. Fethiye village eggs, a scarcity over winter, were dotted about many of the stalls on Fethiye market on Tuesday and it won’t be long before we see the holy grail that is the morel mushroom.

Fethiye Fish Sandwich

Balık ekmeği (fish sandwich) Fethiye-style

Everyone loves Spring. It symbolises new beginnings and a time to start afresh – we dig the garden, plant pretty flowers, cut old growth back, carry out the traditional spring cleaning – and many of us start to think about warmer weather which in turn flashes up the realisation that we will no longer be able to hide under our big woolly jumpers.

Yes! After taking part in Runtalya 2011, our Springtime healthy living has been kicked into action. Sales of Efes Pilsen are going to take a hit as I refrain from drinking it for a few weeks. (Note the I not we). Next week, we will start new running programmes and yesterday, the healthy eating regime started. There are loads of healthy Turkish recipes that we can work our way through…

…and loads of food that we ought to cut back on. Yes, we do love our balık ekmeği (fish in bread) from Popeye’s boat on Fethiye harbour. Crispy, battered fish, fresh rocket leaves, thinly sliced onion, tomato and lemon juice, all served between fresh, crusty Turkish bread. We’ll continue to indulge in and enjoy this loveliness…just not quite as often as we have been doing over winter.
