Seasonal Food in Turkey: What’s On The Markets?

Spring 2011 in Fethiye has been a wet one and at times, chilly. We were beginning to wonder if summer was ever going to come – and nowhere is this blip in the seasonal weather more obvious than at the local Turkish pazar. Seasonal fruit such as çağla (unripe almonds), yeni dünya (maltese plum) and erik (unripe plums) all appeared on the stalls of Fethiye market a good two weeks later than last year and stalls are still brimming with them.

Prices on Fethiye market vary throughout the season depending on the age, size, ripeness and abundance of the produce. We had a comment from a lady recently who visits Fethiye at the same time every year. She was wondering why the cherries were more expensive than in previous years. Well, that’s because the seasonal weather is trying to catch up with itself. At this time of year, stalls are usually packed with cherries in their prime. At the moment, they’re just starting to appear; it’s the beginning of the cherry season. But, as if by magic, the sun has started to shine, temperatures have rocketed and with that come the melon lorries. This Tuesday felt more like summer as we strolled around a relatively quiet market. By the end of summer, we’ll probably be craving anything but melon but, for now, they look so inviting and refreshing as we try to acclimatise to the sudden heat burst. The melon mountains are a welcome sight.

And slowly, slowly, the spring and summer seasonal fruit is coming into its own. We bought a galia melon and, on arrival back home, the maintenance guy on our site knocked on the door and handed us a bundle of plums. Wonderful! An early summer brunch of chilled melon and plums on the balcony. And lunch?

It’s a festival of seasonal food at the moment. Spring onions are white and bulbous and baby new potatoes make intermittent appearances. When they do, we swoop down on them as they’re perfect for making potato salad. I made one last night (this photo was taken in late evening sunlight) and we’ve just finished the leftovers for lunch.

Stalls are bursting with the vibrant colours of summer fruits and vegetables at the moment. This is our favourite time of year to be shopping for seasonal food at local markets. When’s yours?

  4. We have just started eating watermelon here, these honeydews havent come in yet but enjoying all the peaches, cherries, plums etc

  5. Looks so delicious. I love shopping at markets. This is my favorite time as well since its white asparagus and raspberry season in Germany.

    I love the Turkish markets…..everything is so fresh and tastes like it is supposed to…..especially the seasonal food. Love your photo’s, makes me want to reach for it.
    When I come home after visiting Turkey the fresh foods seem plasticky here at the supermarket in North America.

  8. @ Anonymous: We love to do our shopping there, too. I know what you mean. When we’re in the supermarkets in the UK, it’s awful looking at all the packed fruit and veg.
