Aerial Istanbul – View From A Plane

On Thursday we left Turkey and a gloriously sunny Istanbul by taking a flight to Rome. The weather in Istanbul was hot and, most importantly, it was clear. We flew from Sabiha Gökçen Airport on the Anatolian side of Istanbul (more about that airport in a later post – it really does merit a post on its own) but the flight path meant we got to fly over the whole of Istanbul. Amazing!

Anyone who knows Istanbul will know that clear days like this are few and far between. The city is no stranger to a bit of haze, cloud or smog, but on Thursday, the weather gods smiled down on us and allowed us this amazing aerial view of our favourite city.

Istanbul from the air

I’ve put a tint on the photo so that the outlines are more visible – so let’s do a bit of basic geography to get our bearings. Top centre, you can see some islands. They’re the Princes Islands which are yet to make an appearance on this blog. We’ve not been for a long time and we’re hoping to get there again soon. The sea is the Marmara Sea and, just underneath the wing of the plane, we could see all the tankers and cargo ships waiting for their turn to make the journey along the Bosphorus towards the Black Sea.

Which brings us along nicely to the Bosphorus. Top left land mass is the Asian side of Istanbul and the stretch of water running left to right is indeed the Bosphorus Strait. You can just see the Bosphorus Bridge on the far left.

Following the Bosphorus back towards the Marmara Sea and the stretch of water that begins running downwards on this photo is the Golden Horn. The tip of the right hand peninsula is home to Topkapı Palace, Aya Sofya, Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) and the like. Cross Galata Bridge (the very top bridge before the Bosphorus) and this takes you to the likes of Karaköy fish market and Taksim Square…and obviously, much more besides.

Down there, on that land mass, people were living Istanbul as we cruised above them. Flying is a strange phenomenon when you think about it…
