Winter In Fethiye: It's Hotel Renovation Time Again

Characteristics of winter in Fethiye: sometimes stormy, sometimes perfect, ice blue skies; dead calm waters with the purest of reflections; crisp, clear views over an extended horizon...and construction. Last week, we posted about the developments along Phase 3 of Fethiye harbour. Things are still 'developing' at pace here but, for this post, it's the turn of that other construction project that appears each year as soon as the last flight from Dalaman Airport: the inevitable hotel renovation project.

We'd heard mumblings throughout last summer of potential changes to be made over the winter months to two Fethiye hotels in particular. It's all systems go as far as changes to Fethiye are concerned and it's no different with these two hotels.

Kemal Hotel

Kemal Hotel, Fethiye
For as long as we can remember, the Kemal Hotel has sat on the corner of the harbour minding its own business. We can't say it has ever been pleasing on the eye - think classic 1970s concrete structure - but it's never particularly offended, either. It was just there. A part of the harbour scenery.

The Yelken Restaurant made up the terrace at the base of the hotel and ticked over throughout the summer season, again, seemingly minding its own business. We never went there. No reason other than that it was just a part of Fethiye's scenery that never beckoned us to go in.

Well, the personality of the Kemal Hotel is set to change (no doubt its name will be changing, too) and this building will soon be announcing in loud, proud, confident fashion, "I am here!"

With rooms a matter of metres from the harbour's edge, overlooking the bay and the new Fethiye town square, this hotel, despite the lack of swimming pool, is now prime real estate. And it's currently being gutted and made to look like the prime real estate that it is. Fethiye is getting another boutique hotel to add to its growing collection, the Orka Boutique Hotel...

As you can see in the photo, the main structure of the building is unchanged - as yet - and when we walked by recently, most of the noise was coming from inside. We're no builders but it sounded very much like interior walls being smashed down and the resulting rubble being swept away. We look forward to posting photos of the completed project soon-ish...

Yacht Classic

Haven't we posted photos in the past about construction at the Yacht Classic? Haven't we also written about how much we enjoy our blisteringly hot sunny days sat by the breezy Yacht Classic marina? Well, our thought always was, "Huge success as far as the refurbishment goes but thought they might have updated the swimming pool." Oh, how impatient we are!

A new pool for Yacht Classic
A team of builders is currently working - at some speed! - on this new swimming pool. This is on the site of the original swimming pool and looks more intimate than its predecessor. But that's not all. The spare land at the side of the hotel is also owned by the hotel and they're now making use of it in impressive style.

Another swimming pool is being built and it's huge. If you know Yacht Classic's neighbouring hotel, Ece Saray, we think this new pool for Yacht Classic matches the size of the pool at Ece Saray. It's possibly slightly bigger even. Shower blocks and changing rooms have also been built on this site for the boats on the marina...which leads us to wonder if the marina might be extended this way? Let's see... We're also wondering if, as non-guests, we'll still be able to use the facilities here in summer 2013. Again, let's see...

This is looking great, it's one of my favourite eat treats this place, so can't wait to sample the new pools etc. I have a feeling we will be spending more time here than usual. Thanks for this update.:))

@ Jan: Well, we'll all be able to see how it's progressing soon. :) We love the Yacht Classic food, too.

i can't wait to see this when it is finished!

@ Jaz: Should be lovely. It was lovely before but this should be even better. :)

Non related question - Do you know any hotels, pensions, part hotels in Fethiye that allow dogs to stay?

@ BacktoBodrum: Not sure to be honest but leave it with us. Should have an answer by tomorrow and will post it here. :)

@ BacktoBodrum: Found a few ideas for you. Kilim Apart Hotel (on main road but close to seafront) in Fethiye apparently accepts dogs. We've also got contact with a lady with a villa in Kayaköy who accepts dogs and another lady in Ovacık who also has a villa that takes dogs. Her villa opens out onto forest. Give us a shout if any of these sound good for you and we can try and sort some contact details for you. :)

Thanks for these Julia - We have old friends on a yacht (too posh for a dog) in the marina for the winter and we'd like to spend a few days down in your part of the world.
